IMPACT ON THE GROUND: Creating social value through coding skills – the next digital leaders

As coding has become higher in demand, IAMTHECODE works to create social value through the development of skills in young people across the world. Tiia chats with Lady Mariéme Jemme about her inspiration behind creating the IAMTHECODE FOUNDATION. The episode explores the need for digital education and Lady Mariéme’s project to enable one million young women and girls to learn how to code.

Coding skills have a vast impact on the future prospects of young people. IAMTHECODE works with people from challenging circumstances e.g. young offenders, who change the course of their life through coding skills. They help secondary and A-level students at schools to code through online and offline teaching. Coding is a language itself and can be learned although someone would not have strong literacy and mathematical skills.

On the international level, IAMTHECODE works with international humanitarian organisations like the United Nations in 80 countries with the support of sponsors and large technology providers to teach coding skills in refugee camps. Women and girls, especially, have different future prospects and opportunities through coding skills. The IAMTHECODE programme gives hope and skills for the future in places, where people have very few prospects for life.

Lady Mariéme founded IAMTHECODE from her own experience of changing her life through coding. Her circumstances a couple of decades ago were not promising or easy, but she created an unexpected future for herself through technology skills and her determination. A true inspiration.
